The Board of Trustees of the Village of Wilmette voted to begin a bus system on an experimental basis, and Wilbus service began in March, 1974, as a project planned and managed by Northwestern students under the firm name of OTR Planning Consultants, Inc. Ridership steadily increased, and no thought was given to discontinuing the "experiment." RTA began providing a subsidy to the Village in 1974, and in June, 1977, the Village took over management. When PACE was formed in 1981, they took control of the subsidy. In January, 1995, Wilbus operations were transferred to PACE and the Village ceased its involvement with the bus service.
